The Salvation Army is offering Jamestown area youth ages 13-16 full scholarships to an overnight teen camp that will take place on August 14-19.  The Scholarship includes transportation to and from Long Point Camp, located on Seneca Lake in Penn Yan, NY.  For more information, call 716-664-4108, and ask fro Jolene. The Sherman Community is again anticipating the excitement that is generated each year the first weekend in August and would like to invite everyone to join them at the Annual Sherman Day Celebration.  This year’s events start on Friday night, August 1st with the SCS Alumni Dinner/meeting held in the school gymnasium followed by a Bonfire and Live Music at the Sherman Firemen’s grounds on Klondyke Road starting at 8:30 p.m.  The fun continues on Saturday with the Grand Parade at 10 as well as tons of family activities during the day. 

 

The Open Meadows United Methodist Church at 3183 Open Meadows Rd. Ashville, will host a rummage, bake and craft sale with chicken and biscuits lunch on August 2nd from 9:00am to 3:00pm with lunch served starting at 11:00.

 

The Fenton History Center is leading a walking tour of the “old Northside” of Jamestown, now our greater downtown this Saturday, August 2 at 1 PM, starting at the Fenton History Center, 67 Washington St.  From 4th St. to the Chadakoin, learn about the people and businesses that thrived here from the early 1800s to the 1950s.    The tour is approximately 2 hours long and will end back at the Fenton History Center. The fee is $10 for potential members and $5 for Fenton History Center members.  New this year children are free, limit 2 per adult, with a paying adult. Make your plans now to attend this year’s Gerry Rodeo!  It’s going to be another great year of rodeo fun in Gerry NY. The rodeo is on this Wednesday thru Saturday night at 8 and there is a Saturday matinee at 2:00.  Come early for the famous Gerry Rodeo Fire Department’s BBQ Beef dinner served nightly at 5:00! Pre sale tickets available at gerryrodeo.org. All proceeds from the event benefit the Gerry Fire Department!

 

Saturday August 2nd at 10:30am, thousands of breastfeeding women and their babies/children across the world will gather in their own communities to take part in the Big Latch On, a synchronized breastfeeding event in multiple locations. Please join the Chautauqua County WIC Program for Our local Big Latch On at Moore Park in Westfield.  Please arrive promptly at 10:00 for registration. Chautauqua County Community Mental Hygiene Services are reminding residents about two additional Community Drug Forums focused on the growing epidemic of Opiate use and abuse in Chautauqua County. This forum is open to all community members August 4 from 9a.m. to noon at Jamestown Community College’s Carnahan Building and from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Jamestown Community College North County Training Center.  No pre-registration is required. The Shoestring Players under the direction of Richard Corbin produced a number of musical shows at the Scottish Rite Consistory (now the Jackson Center) during the 1960’s and 1970’s.  Members of the performing group have organized a small reunion at the Jackson Center scheduled for Saturday, August 9th.  Since the group is quite diverse, we are asking anyone who was involved in the Shoestring Players or who knows anyone who was involved to pass the word along.  Call John at 716 720-3424 for more information.

 

The Westfield Quilters’ Guild will be holding its biannual quilt show at The Westfield Academy and Central School, at 230 E. Main Street, in Westfield, on August 8th, 9th, and 10th.  Show hours are Friday and Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Admission is $4.00, and the admission ticket will be good for the entire weekend.  Parking is free.    For more information about the show, you can contact Pam Farnham at 716-581-1706. The admission price goes towards our guild's programs, one of them being comfort quilts, where we make quilts and donate them to various organizations in Chautauqua County.

 

The feature film God’s Not Dead  will be shown for free on Sunday, August 10, 6 pm at Hillcrest Baptist, Hallock and Newland.  Popcorn and more will be served. 

 

32,000 children in Chautauqua County will suffer the loss of a parent before their high school Graduation. You can help them by joining us on August 16th at 4pm for the Marcia A. Conrad Scholarship Benefit at the Carroll Rod and Gun Club, as we come together to raise money to provide scholarships to those children in need. If you or a loved one has suffered the loss of a parent you know how important this cause is. Bemus Point’s Village Park will be alive with artists for the Fifth Annual “A Stir of Artists” Art Show and Sale on Saturday and Sunday, August 16 and 17, 2014.  With hours from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, the show will take place rain or shine in this Chautauqua Lake village.

 

The Inaugural Gala of Hope is Saturday, August 16th at the Jamestown Train Station. It’ll be a night filled with friends, food, fun, and a chance to win a trip to Las Vegas! You’ll enjoy a great evening of casino style games, music and fun… but more importantly you’ll be helping to save thousands of baby’s lives in Honduras. Take part in A Ride to Remember on August 16th at the Falconer Fire Hall.  The Dice Run for Alzheimer’s will begin at 10:10am, with registration opening at 9am.  The cost is $20 for a single and $30 with a rider and all profits benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.  For more information contact the Falconer Fire Department and let’s all help end Alzheimers!

 

The Chautauqua County Antique Equipment Association will hold its 40th annual show of antique engines, farm tractors, autos, models, and other mechanical equipment August 15, 16, and 17 on its grounds on Cemetery Road, Stockton, N. Y. For a $5 donation, the public can see the equipment in operation and on parade. There is a flea market, ample free parking, food, and permanent restrooms all on the grounds. There are demonstrations and events throughout the day as well as special events at posted times. Children under 14 are admitted free. Senior citizen admission Friday is $3.

 

Generic PSA: Prendergast Library is offering a daily book sale this year, and customers are invited to browse any time the library is open.  The library accepts donations from the public year-round and puts items out as soon as they are received. Regular prices are $2 for adult hardcover books and $1 each for adult paperbacks, young adult books, and children’s books. Credit cards are accepted.   Shopping hours are 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.   The daily sale, which began last fall, is replacing the library’s annual sale this year The annual book sale, which began in 1980 and took place the second weekend of June, will not be held because building construction to expand handicapped accessibility is about to begin.   The library is located at 509 Cherry St., Jamestown. Generic PSA:  The Salvation Army is looking for some financial help.  Your business or your service organization might be able to contribute.  The Salvation Army oversees a small, free weekly music program with instrumental instruction, band, chorus and dance.  Over 95% of the children and youth who attend their current music programs come from underprivileged homes.  The Salvation Army currently lacks the resources to grow this program.  If you can help with any donation 100% will go to develop this program.

 

Generic PSA:  Nearly 400 children younger than 15 drown in pools each year.  300 of them are victims younger than 5.  These tragic incidents are entirely preventable.  Make sure kids learn how to swim.  Always watch them in and around water.  Properly fence all pools and stay away from drains.   For more information on how to protect your child go to PoolSafely.gov.

 

Generic PSA:  The Veteran’s Memorial Park being built off Logan Avenue and West Third Street in Jamestown is very close to completion, however they need to close the gap of $20,000.  The committee hopes to have this project completed by Veteran’s Day and are asking for the community’s help by making a Tax deductible donation on behalf of all veteran’s.  Please send checks to Veteran’s Memorial Commission Relocation Fund c/o Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, 418 Spring Street, Jamestown.

Generic PSA: The Village of Celoron announces its annual "Summer Concert Series in the Park".  The concerts are held in Lucille Ball Memorial Park on Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Desi Arnaz Bandshell.

Generic PSA: Get moving this summer with Fitness in the Parks – a FREE program designed to encourage all Western New Yorkers to stay on track with their fitness goals! Everyone is welcome to participate in these FREE, 60-minute fitness classes, taught by certified instructors.  Zumba on Monday at 5:30pm at Allen Park.  Tai Chi on Wednesday’s at 10am.  Pilates on Tuesdays at 6:30pm at Lakewood Beach and Boot Camp on Thursday’s at 9:30am at Lakewood Beach.  Visit jamestownymca.org for more information.

 

Generic PSA: The repair of the St. Luke’s church tower in downtown Jamestown is well underway.  The damage caused by a strike of lightning last September, has been put back together and the historic clock faces have been removed for restoration and replacement.   Unfortunately, everything is not covered by insurance.  More financial support is needed to help pay for the repairs and the upgrades that will need to be put into place for the clock mechanisms and the bells for downtown Jamestown.  Any donations from the community are welcome to help make our landmark bell tower and clocks operational once again.  For information on how you can help, please contact the St. Luke’s office at 483-6405 or by visiting StLukesJamestown.org.  Thank you.

 

Generic PSA: Prendergast Library is offering a Mad Scientist Lib-Lab drop-in event Tuesday through Saturday through  Aug. 30 at  509 Cherry St., Jamestown. The Family Experi-Event is tied into Fizz! Boom! Read!, this year’s science-related Summer Reading theme with kits provided by the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Library System. Subjects include color, gears, and magnification with a new topic and different activities every week. For information, call 484-7135.
