Sponsor of latest county Welfare-to-Work program pleased to see it's being utilized more...

The number of people on Public Assistance in Chautauqua County has grown since last August... but, the number of those people taking part in the county's Welfare-to-Work program has also increased.  The latter item is good news for the sponsor of the legislation to revived the Welfare-to-Work program in early 2012.  Legislator John Runkle is responding to this week's report to the Human Services Committee by Health and Human Services Director Christine Schuyler.  Runkle says... after bottoming out at 10-percent a couple of years ago... the number has grown to 21-percent.  He adds they've also noticed a lot of cost-savings associated with that.  Runkle says the stepped up effort over the past year has saved the county about $7-million in Social Service and Medicaid costs.  Unfortunately... the Cassadaga-area Republican says the initial Welfare to Work program was "let go" for a long period of time.  He says it's important because the Social Services budget takes up about 80-percent of the county's tax levy.  Schuyler was joined by the county's director of Temporary Assistance, Marge Johnson, to report on the Welfare to Work program... and, others.

Cuomo says $33-million in Campaign War Chest not meant to "scare-off" opponents...

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says the $33.3-million in his re-election fund isn't meant to scare off would-be opponents.  The 56-year-old Democrat says it's necessary in case someone with great personal wealth tries to win the office by outspending him.  In a radio interview Friday... he said he needs to be in a position to explain what his administration has done and is planning.  Asked about an analysis showing most of his campaign donations came from wealthy donors... and whether he'd be more responsive to their interests, Cuomo says a lot of that conversation is ``baloney.''  He says people want to know if he's working for them.  Cuomo says he's not among the politicians who can be bought and that he's going to do what he believes is right.
